Murphysboro, IL was incorporated in 1867 and is located in Jackson County. It has a population of about 9,500 people. Many people will say that living in this town is great because of the excellent schools, friendly residents, affordable homes and much more. The Murphysboro Chamber of Commerce will tell you the same thing because they work with the businesses, schools and everything else in the town.

One of the oldest and largest festivals in Murphysboro is the Apple Festival and there are several things going on at this festival. They have stage shows, carnival rides, food, queen contest, prince and princess contest, apple pie eating contests, water fights and car shows. Another festival that goes on is the Festival of Trees. This festival is held during the month of December. Everyone who participates will decorate a Christmas tree or wreath and the proceeds from the silent and oral auction will benefit a charity.

The Shawnee National Forest spreads to the west and south of Murphysboro and it covers 1/4 million richly wooded acres. This forest is full of lakes, ponds, rivers, rock formations, caves, hills and bluffs.

The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail is a perfect way to spend a relaxing day. You can eat some breakfast then head to the wine trail for some wine tasting and antique shopping. Some of the wineries offer music and entertainment on the weekends.
