Vandalia is a located along the banks of the Kaskaskia River, and is the oldest existing capitol city of Illinois. With free admission you can visit the Old State Capitol Tues-Sat 9-5. Vandalia has many attractions including Fayette County Museum, Madonna Of The Trail, and Little Brick House. Each fall if you are in the area you can take a cemetery walk through the Old State Cemetery, where local residents portray some of the people buried there.

Whether it's just a day trip or to stay for the weekend Vandalia Lake has many things to do such as: camping, fishing, boating or swimming at the beach.

Looking for Community events or for tourist information while stopping in the area try looking online at the Vandalia Chamber of Commerce or for the City of Vandalia for more information on what's happening in the area. The downtown area in Vandalia by Gallatin St that has been revitalized will hope to draw in more restaurants and specialty shops. If your looking to head back to school visit Kaskaskia College.
